Brooks Penny farthing race!

May 9, 2011

In 2011 Nocturne and Brooks England will bring Penny Farthing racing (properly called ‘Ordinaries’) back to the streets of the City of London. Competitors from across the globe will descend on the historic Smithfield Market to battle it our across two action packed races:

RACE 1: The Brooks Penny Farthing Sprint
The sprint is all about speed and quite simply the fastest gent or lady to race the 1 mile distance will be the winner. Fast and furious, this will be the perfect build up to the main event.

RACE 2: The Brooks Ordinary Trophy
With an illustrious history the Grand Old Ordinary Trophy will once again be decided on the streets of the City of London. Our daring riders will race for 30 minutes and 5 laps across the challenging London circuit as they bid for glory and the coveted trophy.

Well this looks like fun!

We consider ourselves to be gloriously average cyclists. We appreciate the hard rides and the easy ones. Sometimes, we stop for coffee or beer and most of those times we linger a bit longer than you might expect. That is not to say that we do not relish the hard efforts that come with being a cyclist. The long pulls into a headwind or the climbs that dangle in front of you for what seem to be days. We have even found, a few of us, that we enjoy a trip or two over the pavé, or that we feel at home with gravel bouncing off our shins and shoes. Sometimes this makes us a little heady and we get caught up in the beauty and suffering of riding our bicycles, so we tend to think of ourselves as good riders. But that does not mean that for a minute, or second, do any of us think we can hold a candle to the professional peloton, to what it takes to be a professional cyclist. Read on…

George Marshall takes great photos.

And this one is no exception – Matt Hoffman aka ‘The Condor’ my childhood hero, complete with grey beard.

I had a Hoffman flash once, it was too short for me, I didn’t care, it was a Hoffman.

George is currently working on Albion magazine and snapping shots for Rapha’s survey… amongst other things. Dude is in demand!

Peep George Marshall.

Tim commutes on an old geared 90′s mountain bike nicknamed the “Monster Truck” and he came to me wanting something special as a second bike. He wanted a track frame for the road and something thats light, fast and a lot of fun, something thats a real contrast to his everyday ride, in his words “I want this one to be like a Ferrari in my shed”.

It’s got a sweet bar/stem combo, dropped seat stays, track ends with built in adjusters and I love the paint, every time I look at it reminds me of a Pantone swatch book. The frame is now waiting in the ‘shop for a full build…

Looking good, Tim. Shouts out to Tom Donhou on this one… It’s great to see new builders prosper.
