AITA & Bilenky.

November 29, 2010

Bilenky Cycle Works was founded in Northeastern Philadelphia in 1983 with the goal of meeting the specific needs of the individual cyclist. Stephen Bilenky recognized the need for specially proportioned frames and components for riders of all shapes and sizes, and began creating a range of custom products to answer the outfitting needs of recreational, fitness and utility cyclists from all over the world.

BCW’s philosophy of perfectionism shines through in every bike they build. Their frames can be compared to a bespoke suit, tailored to fit both the rider’s aesthetic and physical needs. Whether it’s waiting four weeks for a retro-fit to come back, or four months for that super-customized nit-picked-over-every-detail dream bike, one ride on a Bilenky bike will prove that it is in a league of its own.

For the month of November, Art in the Age and Bilenky Cycle Works will demonstrate the craft of custom framebuilding. By creating a miniature version of the Bilenky shop within AITA, Stephen Bilenky and his crew will highlight the specific build qualities and artistry that set a Bilenky bicycle apart from the rest. Join us at AITA for a unique behind the scenes look at this rare craft.

Thanks to Dan at AITA for pointing these vids out, they are ace and Stephen Bilenky comes across as such a lovely man!

Dream Team.

November 10, 2010

Our friend and artist Riccardo Guasco just sent us some samples of his latest work titled, “The Dream Team” of cyclists. Beautifully captured characters, and you have to love that mustache. See more of the illustrations here in Riccardo’ s gallery.

Via Elcyclista who also wrote the above words and yes, quite a magnificent moustache… just wait until I reveal mine. EEK!

Meeting of Minds.

June 17, 2010

This fantastic event takes place next Thursday evening and I am involved, see my name? Second down from top? Right, so we’ve cleared that up then.

I have a few photography works exhibited at M.O.M – Meeting of Minds but to be honest, the caliber of work that is going to be on show next week, besides mine is absolutely mind blowing and I cannot wait to see what some people will be putting in.

If you are free and like a bit of art and creativity, pass along, it’s free and good!

Could the bottom picture be of 2009 National Champ, Kristian House supping at the elixir of life? The ever versatile Coca Cola. That stuff saved my life once, atop the cret de Chatillon. Doomed I was, doomed until handed the magical red tin by Joe, or was it Kieran? I don’t remember. I do remember however, having the ability to ride again, and speak again for that matter once the secret ingredients of the famous American cola had been fully consumed and digested. Unbeatable.

Christ, we could not get away with this now in 2010, absolutely no way! Brilliantly visionary for the time though.

Taken from the book Death on the Streets – Cars and the mythology of road safety.

Walk the Plank’s illuminated Art Car Parades – full of mechanical mischief – will take over Manchester’s streets This Thursday 26th and in Edinburgh this Saturday the 28th November. Ben Wilson was one of three artists to be awarded commissioning money to create a mobile work of art, which will join the existing troupe of vehicles. ARTIKCAR is inspired by a child’s wooden toy car. The Pedal Powered vehicle is made from steel tubing, it steers by leaning and uses an innovative technology to illuminate the car. If you’re near by please come and see the parades: Illuminated Art Car Parade, Manchester City Centre, Thursday 26th November, cars on display from 3pm, parade from 6.30pm.

Man I wish we had cool stuff like this going on round these parts!

Chris Gilmour. A life size bicycle made entirely out of cardboard and glue. Incredible.

The work of Chris Gilmour provokes surprise and amazement beyond what could appear to be a mere process of reproduction. In returning to the value of making and strongly emphasising it, these works reveal a process of understanding that lets us see everyday reality with new awareness and appreciation. This practice avoids a withdrawal into the limbo of craft, and implies an intimate and profound quest towards the reason of things.

See more of Chris’ work here. Also check this!
