The Eddy files.

July 17, 2011

I have never seen such a massive collection of Eddy Merckx photographs and scans in one place, the grip is something else… There’s even a bunch of family photos up in there!

Unfortunately the owner has disabled the ability to download the files so I can’t show them here (screenshots come in handy mind you) but do yourself a favour and click through for 600% of Merckx goodness.

The Cannibal, Crushing.

A great bit of Cannibal footage. Now then, a question… Does anyone know where I can get/watch Eddy Merckx ‘in the vicinity of a cup of coffee’ from 73? I have only read of it and would love to peep it… so if you know, please get in touch!

“I asked John to build it light for the mountains but it needed to put up with some bad roads,” Hampsten said. “It was light but I know John was fairly conservative about going too light. His geometry is perfect; I never felt it wouldn’t get me out of the way when I was going around or through a crash, yet on the bad road conditions we experienced it was never unstable.”

“The year after ’88 we had Eddy Merckx as our bike supplier,” he continued. “He is the master at fitting bikes to riders and taught us not to get hung up on light bikes. Why save seconds on a climb and lose minutes on a descent? Slawta certainly has an old world style of making bikes that go up and downhill properly.”

Real nice read this one. Read the rest here.

Essential Viewing.

If you like cycling and you know of the man Eddy Merckx you should endeavour to get your mitts on this.

La Course en tete/The greatest show on earth is a fantastic documentary and a great chance to see ‘The Cannibal’ in all his glory.

The DVD is split into two films. The first is La Course en Tete ( head of the course ) and focuses on Merckx himself and his great career.

The second film is The Greatest Show on Earth, and a very captivating film on the 1974 Giro d’Italia. It shows Merckx, and all his rivals very well. You’ll come away cheering for Jose Manuel Fuente, the greatest climber of his generation who was one of the only men with the grit to attack Merckx.

Honestly this is a great watch and for anyone who loves a bit of old footage this is like the holy grail.

Loving this T-Shirt from Aussie streetwear label P.A.M aka Perks and Mini.

For those who don’t know, here is it’s origin:
The original Eddy Merckx headtube badge logo.

Speaking of Merckx headtubes, I love this:

Now I would have liked to put up a link on where you can find the T-shirt to grip for yourself but unfortunately today google has failed me. Sorry folks. Blame google.

His hour record attempt… on film yo!

More Eddy Merckx

January 20, 2009

Here is Eddy Merckx again, during his triumphant attempt at breaking the hour record distance by riding 49.431 km in an hour.

Although adorned with Windsor stickers at the time, the actual bike used during the record is now well-known to be a highly custom Colnago Pista equipped with various parts of magnesium and titanium that were provided by Pino Morroni.

Also peep this older Spinwell post of his hour record bike.

On Velosniper

Anonymously sharing my thoughts on the internet bike-part landscape.

Basically Mr Velo and his co-snipers spend most of their time scouting around on the Interweb looking for rare and exciting bicycle parts and then telling everyone about them. I like it!

Peep this one off Eddy Merckx Low pro I spotted on their blogspot.

from the 90s. the frame is in good condition with few chips. this frame was special produced by eddy merckx for a pro race driver. the saddle tube is very special at the top with an extension and two seat bolts. it was made for more stability for a large driver.
