Spinwell visits Reynolds.

Think of Reynolds and most will instantly think of 531, the tube of choice for racing bikes over countless years and not to mention the numerous tour wins that were gained aboard this cro-moly steel pipe. Since 1958 up until the modern day, the Reynolds butted tubeset has dominated the roads, Anquetil, Merckx, and Hinault all used Reynolds exclusively in their Tour victories. Now there’s an accolade.

I was recently lucky enough to be offered a bit of time to walk around the Reynolds factory and to have a quick chat with the MD about all things Reynolds and what came clear at my 45 minute mini tour was that Reynolds are still as passionate about the metal tube as they have always been. I may sound surprised at this but I really was, I honestly thought I’d be greeted by super high tech billion pound machines churning out carbon for motorbikes but what I actually saw looked like it hadn’t changed since Reynolds began in 1898. Vanhulsteijn.

Vanhulsteijn – Custom built stainless Steel framesets out of Holland.

These look, well, interesting to say the least. I must admit though they do look a little on the flexy side, especially seeing as though they seem to have almost nothing supporting the rear end. That said it is unlikely that you would want to buy one of these for ‘mashing’ as I can’t see power transfer being high on the list of Vanhulsteijn’s build priorities!

Also somewhat reminding me of this:

The great big hunk of Magnesium sh*t that was known as the Kirk.

I may have mentioned this previously but I owned a Kirk when I was about 15 and that also suffered from a flexible frame. It flexed so bad in-fact it that it turned itself around corners and not from the use of the handlebars either I might add but from the pressure applied to the pedals. Fail.

If you are going to build a bike made out of some sort of metal that is to be ridden proper do not change the design. Why would you if not only for aesthetic purposes? There is a perfectly good reason why the Bicycle has been around for so long in it’s current ‘double diamond’ formation and that reason is because it works.
